This poem is dedicated to one of my dearest childhood friends James Lee Hargreaves<\/a> (Jimmy) who passed away from cancer a few short years ago. I will forever love you brother……<\/p>\n

while traveling down 460
\non our way from Chesapeake
\nto Richmond
\nat the town of Wakefield
\nmy muse RLF and I
\nstopped for brunch
\nat a place our mutual
\nchildhood friend Jimmy
\nused to pick up
\ncans of peanuts
\nfor his clients
\n~   the Virginia Diner
\nwhere its outdoor sign
\nimplies things like …..
\nas far as the peanut goes
\nin the context of the world
\nthis is the Capital
\n~   having this nutshell legend
\n~   on their brochure
\nwhen it comes to the
\nso-called “Nut”<\/em>
\nthey are number one
\nand in Virginia
\nthe diner is  …..
\n…..   synonymous with
\nthe finest of peanuts<\/p>\n

hmmm…..
\nsynonymous with<\/em>   ~   I say
\nand in no way
\nout of disrespect
\nfor the rich history of
\nthe lovely Virginia Diner<\/p>\n

the history of the “Nut”<\/em>
\ntechnically a legume
\nmay we not forget
\nor revert back to ….
\n…..   its past history
\nsynonymous with<\/em>
\nthe slave trade
\nbrought to America by slaves
\ngrown in their gardens
\nand mainly eaten by them
\nunless hungry
\nconfederate soldiers
\nwere left no choice
\nbut to eat goober peas
\nof course a song
\nwould be written
\nabout their exploits
\nwell ….
\nthis lowly “Nut”<\/em>
\nlike the soldier
\nwould get its time
\nunder the sun
\nundergo refinement   ~
\nbecome thought of
\nas more useful
\nand grow in its popularity
\nas the peanut
\nhelped along its journey
\nironically
\nby a former slave
\nGeorge Washington Carver<\/p>\n
