{"id":1283,"date":"2014-11-22T12:12:43","date_gmt":"2014-11-22T12:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2014-11-22T12:15:13","modified_gmt":"2014-11-22T12:15:13","slug":"michigan-lives-within-my-soul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/?p=1283","title":{"rendered":"Michigan lives within my soul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/17931_106754932671807_588549_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/17931_106754932671807_588549_n-262x300.jpg\" alt=\"17931_106754932671807_588549_n\" width=\"262\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/17931_106754932671807_588549_n-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.keithalanhamilton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/17931_106754932671807_588549_n.jpg 529w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 85vw, 262px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was born a \u201c<em>Michigander<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nor if you prefer the demonym,<br \/>\n\u201c<em>Michiganian<\/em>,\u201d and yet<br \/>\nI\u2019m not them \u201c<em>Yoopers<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\n\u2018cause I was raised<br \/>\nin that Lower Peninsula<br \/>\nthis place called Freeland<br \/>\na \u201c<em>census-designated place<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nso few in number, it\u2019s an<br \/>\n\u201c<em>unincorporated community<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nwithin Saginaw County<br \/>\nyou\u2019ve heard of Saginaw<br \/>\nnamed like a bay in Lake Huron<br \/>\ninside the area of \u201c<em>The Thumb<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nthe same place Lefty Frizzell<br \/>\nof Country music fame<br \/>\nsang about in 1964<br \/>\nthat song,<br \/>\nyou know reaching #1<br \/>\n4 weeks at the top of the charts,<br \/>\n\u201c<em>Saginaw, Michigan<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nSaginaw too, once was<br \/>\nthe land territory<br \/>\n&#8220;<em>where the Sauk were,<\/em>&#8221; until<br \/>\nthe Ojibwe, whose blood<br \/>\nas they say, flows in my veins,<br \/>\ndrove them away<br \/>\n~ ~<br \/>\nnow I grew up in a township<br \/>\nnear a river of the same name<br \/>\nwith a bridge once made of steel<br \/>\nwell, this river<br \/>\nis called to this day<br \/>\nthe \u201c<em>Tittabawassee<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nor as the Native Americans<br \/>\n~ \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0First Nations<br \/>\nsaid it in a treaty,<br \/>\n\u201c<em>Tetabawasink<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\nanother tidbit<br \/>\nconnected to the river,<br \/>\nwhere the name<br \/>\nof the place<br \/>\nFreeland,<br \/>\nwas said to have come to be<br \/>\nback in the late 1800\u2019s<br \/>\nthe lumber and river men<br \/>\nwould frequent a tavern<br \/>\nalong this river<br \/>\nowned and operated<br \/>\nby a women,<br \/>\nwho was known to all then<br \/>\nas \u201c<em>Mammy Freeland<\/em>\u201d<br \/>\n~ ~<br \/>\nas far as me<br \/>\nmy connection to Freeland<br \/>\nis that my family<br \/>\naround the early 1960\u2019s<br \/>\nmoved there on Webster Rd<br \/>\nlater living<br \/>\non a road named Carter<br \/>\nafter my ironworker father<br \/>\npurchased the acre parcel<br \/>\na portion surrounded<br \/>\nor squared in<br \/>\nby flat farmland \u00a0 ~<br \/>\nas a child and even more so<br \/>\nin teenage years<br \/>\nthroughout this<br \/>\noften tilled land<br \/>\nwith fields of corn<br \/>\nor navy beans<br \/>\nI was often accompanied<br \/>\nby my best friend<br \/>\na beagle,<br \/>\nmy dog Dino<br \/>\nwe together<br \/>\nboth enjoyed many hours<br \/>\nwalking these country fields<br \/>\nand exploring, learning<br \/>\nabout Nature<br \/>\nfor it was during<br \/>\nthese expeditions<br \/>\nlost to my younger years<br \/>\nthat my spirituality<br \/>\nmy inner emergent spirit<br \/>\nmoved and prodded me<br \/>\nalong the journey,<br \/>\na path to write and relate<br \/>\nto share with others<br \/>\nmy lived experience<br \/>\ndoing so, through<br \/>\na process of self discovery<br \/>\nwondering and wandering<br \/>\nemotively, intuitively<br \/>\nas well as psychically<br \/>\nwithin <em>My Empathic Mysticism<\/em><br \/>\n~ ~<br \/>\nupon becoming a man<br \/>\na young adult<br \/>\nmy wandering Scot spirit<br \/>\novercame the stay put<br \/>\nGerman\/Polish spirit<br \/>\nI did yearn for<br \/>\nway something more<br \/>\neerily inside,<br \/>\nmentally and physically<br \/>\nI needed to explore things<br \/>\nelsewhere,<br \/>\nin different places<br \/>\ntraveling to live in the city<br \/>\nas well as,<br \/>\nflying the states<br \/>\non an adventure,<br \/>\ngoing here and there<br \/>\nthen eventually,<br \/>\nafter awhile<br \/>\nI settled down<br \/>\nout east,<br \/>\nnext to the Atlantic Ocean<br \/>\ncoming to reside in the<br \/>\nCommonwealth of Massachusetts<br \/>\n~ ~<br \/>\neven though, I do<br \/>\nreally enjoy New England<br \/>\nmy children<br \/>\nand grandchildren<br \/>\nlive here with me<br \/>\nand too,<br \/>\nI really have no need<br \/>\nto live any place else<br \/>\n\u2018cause this is my home now<br \/>\nthe spirit of Michigan<br \/>\nthe land, the waters<br \/>\nand the peoples<br \/>\nthe cultures from the past<br \/>\ntill present, still<br \/>\nwill always,<br \/>\nlive<br \/>\nwithin my soul<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I was born a \u2018Michigander\u2019 or if you prefer the demonym, \u2018Michiganian\u2019 and yet, I\u2019m not them \u2018Yoopers,\u2019 \u2018cause I was raised in that Lower Peninsula in a place called Freeland;
