I\u2019m just an ordinary person
\ncoming from the everyday ilk
\nnothing real fancy about me
\nplain
\nborn like a mutt
\nfed upon survival
\nas far back as the Viking,
\ncalled
\nBernard the Dane,
\nthey\u2019ve said
\ninvading Normandy and then
\nas a Beaumont to conquer England
\nlater fleeing to Scotland, only too
\nfight in the War of Independence
\nalongside Bruce,
\nas a lowland family
\ndescending overtime, becoming
\nthe Hamilton’s of Cambuskeith<\/p>\n
1729 was the year, Glasgow the port
\na ship called Diligence,
\nmy ancestors
\nleft for a so-called New World
\neventually,
\ndocking at some place
\na part of New Jersey, my ancestors
\nheaded to the wilderness
\nfrom there
\nplanting roots
\nin northwest Pennsylvania
\ncleared and then farmed the land
\nwhile being some sort of Indian fighter
\nfought in the French and Indian
\nand the Revolutionary wars,
\novertime
\nbecoming Americans,
\nlater expanding
\nto Michigan and beyond,
\nmarrying into
\nthe Germans, the Polish, the Irish
\nthe Swedish, the English, the French
\nthe Canadians, the Chippewa and so on<\/p>\n
All making my spirit within
\nabout everyday
\ncommon, the family, freedom
\nequality
\nand the rights of the individual
\ninspiring my words as a poet,
\nborn from
\nnormalcy,
\nthe struggle over oppression
\nservitude, persecution,
\npoverty and death
\nto speak out, to defend,
\nto remember
\nto honor,
\nall those who came before me
\nand all those
\nthat will follow thereafter
\nas to them being just them
\nand me being
\njust me,
\nordinarily and commonly,
\nbeing of
\nthe everyday ilk, a Hamilton<\/p>\n
